Product Review: Mizuno Wave Ekiden

Recently I was sent a pair of Mizuno Wave Ekidens to review. I’ve been waiting all this time for the snow to leave Maine so that I could get out and give them a good try. I’m not going to go into a whole bunch of detail until I get some more miles on them, but I will share my first impressions with you.

The Ekiden is a zero drop racing flat that weighs less than 5oz in my size 9.5s. These are fairly similar to the Wave Universe except that these have just the tiniest amount of cushion, though not much. When running I can feel the road under my feet and it allows me to focus on my form.

Todays run was on the sides of the road, on asphalt, and dirty asphalt at that. I had no slipping or any issues at all. My feet felt extremely light, like I had no shoes on at all. It was wonderful! I am looking forward to many more Mezamashii runs in these shoes! Since I have a full racing schedule lined up I will be putting them to good use!

Now that I have had a chance to really run in these shoes, I will go into a bit more detail. I have put close to 100 miles on the shoes, and they have held up well. Not too much wear, and they still look great. (Even after running through a stream in Georgia!) If you are looking for a fast, racing flat, and don’t need a whole lot of cushion, these shoes are for you.
What I didn’t like, is that they were a little too flat feeling for me. Don’t get me wrong, but I love my minimal shoes. But.. I like just a little bit of “cush” too, so that I can still feel the road, but feel some cushion underfoot. These shoes felt flat like a board under my feet. I have since given them to someone else who totally enjoys them. I also found them to be a bit narrow in the toebox, and found myself wearing thin socks just to be comfortable.
They are a fantastic shoe, but just not for me.
