Product Review: Darn Tough Socks

Socks. we all wear them, right? Unless you are a runner or sports enthusiast, you probably never gave any thought to the type of socks that you put on your feet. Those of us that run know that the proper footwear is key. So are the socks… if you wear something such as a cotton sock, you are setting yourself up for loads of blisters and trouble.

There are many sock companies out there, and they all have their niche in the field of hosiery. There are many styles of socks, from the low- cut no show ones to the knee high compression socks. I have been researching socks for a while now and was surprised to see so many sock companies out there. I have my all time favorites, but they tend to be a little more expensive, so I try to buy them on sale when I can. I have been looking around to see what is out there for socks with Merino wool. Living in Maine, wool socks are a must for me. In the winter, my feet are cold 100% of the time, all winter long. When running outside, I have to wear Merino or my feet literally go numb from the cold. I also wear Merino in the summer, as I find that the wicking properties of wool go unmatched to any other fiber on my feet.

I found the company “Darn Tough” from Vermont when I was searching. It’s a relatively small company that has found favor in the sock community. They are a sock only company, family run, in the Green Mountains of Northfield Vermont. They have a list of reasons that their socks are “tough” on their website, so I will share them with you.

  • High Density Knitting
  • Perforamance Fit
  • Merino Wool
  • Coolmax blend
  • Ribbed Knit
  • Ribbed Ankle support
  • Elastic Arch Support
  • Ring Toe construction
  • GUARENTEED FOR LIFE!

When you think about how easy it is to wear out a sock, the Guarantee is definitely appealing!

Darn Tough’s product is distinguished from industry competitors by 100 percent USA manufacturing; small-needle knitting which results in more stitches per inch and exceptional durability and cushioning; True-Seamless™ technology; and an exclusive blend of either Coolmax® or ultra-fine merino wool for comfort, fit, durability and moisture management. Founded by Ric Cabot in 2004, a third-generation sock maker, Darn Tough Vermont operates out of Cabot Hosiery Mills. Here are a few pics of the pair that I was sent to review, which I liked very much. These are called the Tab No Show Light Cushion and they retail on the DARN TOUGH WEBSITE for $16.00 a pair, which is comparable to other premium sock company prices.

Here you can see the thickness of the tab/collar of the sock. Very squishy and soft.

The toe is virtually seamless. You don’t feel any rubbing or scratching anywhere. Very comfortable.

Here is a look at the inside of the sock. You can see the thickness in the looping of the yarn. Awesomeness!

And lastly, they are proud of their Vermont heritage. 🙂
