Today I went for my usual run in the forest. I have been trying to do my long runs on the weekends, since I don’t have to worry about the sky going dark on me. Now with the time change here in Maine, it gets dark really early. I don’t have any reflective gear for running outside at night, so I am going to have to invest in some for those occasional times.Today’s temperature was 47* out, and yes I was cold. I wore a short sleeve under armor shirt with a long sleeved one on top. Had on my Aesperis pivot shorts, with my compression tights and a pair of shorts on top. (No my butt wasn’t cold at all.. 😉  I have under armor gloves, which I wore, but they just dont seem to keep my hands warm. I am going to have to try and find some mittens that would work for running.   Does anyone know of good running MITTENS???  My ears got chilly, so I put on one of my bondiband headbands and I was good to go. I had originally set out to do 12 -13 miles, but the cold air was just sucking the life out of me. When the time came to make that decision to do another 6 miles, I said NOPE and headed back to the car to warm up.I found that I really dont care for running when it is cold out. I guess I am woosy and not a cold weather runner. I’m so fortunate that Rob bought me a treadmill so I wont have to be outside struggling all winter. I am finding that I am definitely stronger in my running when I have a “program” telling me what to do, such as a Couch to 5K program. Today I wanted to try something new, so I didn’t turn that on.

A friend of mine blogged about “RUNTASTIC” and I thought I would give it a try. It literally took me 10 mins to figure out how to start it, but that’s because I didn’t really take the time beforehand to look it over. I just turned it on and away I went. What I didn’t know, is that it posts that you are running, on facebook and twitter, and people can give you motivation along the way and you hear it. At first, I kept hearing a mans low voice, and it freaked me out. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out where that was coming from. But then I heard some clapping and cheering, and then it dawned on me what that was. Was scary for a few minutes though.. haahha.

What I like about Runtastic is the user interface. It’s easy to read and understand. I was actually so impressed that I bought the GOLD version! I dont know how many more runs I will have outside, but when I am anywhere out there, I will be using it for sure.  Here’s a screenshot of todays run…

There were a lot of people out walking their dogs, all bundled up in winter gear, and here I was in summer attire. I got a few strange looks, but one man even told me that I was “looking good” and to “keep going”.. That made my day! So if you are looking for a new app to try, I recommend this one for sure. Some people find that the app drains their battery fairly quickly, so I dont know how it would respond until you try it. I didn’t have that issue.
Hoping you all have a great week and safe runs!

I use and have used for the past 25 years running socks as mittens. Usually the ankle kind. It’s a great use for worn out old socks, and if your hands get too hot you can stash them on the roadside to either pick up later or (as sometimes happens) not be able to find again. If they are old socks, it’s no big deal if you can’t find them. The thin ones also tuck into the waistband or pockets if you want to keep them on you. And they are basically free, since you have them anyway. They also keep you warmer because their are no fingers or thumbs. I find I can hold my hand in a more natural way within a sock.

  3. Great job getting out there and running in the cold! I ran yesterday but it was sunny and around 63 degrees with a beautiful blue sky! Soon enough it will be cold and foggy and more difficult to run due to the heavy air (fog) but us runners will make do, right! Be safe and run like the wind!
