My first 5K!! (virtual event)
I did it! I ran a 5K race today, tshirt, bib and all! This is the before picture. Getting ready to start.
I might add that this is at -53 lbs. There’s no way that I could have done this back on Jan 1st when I was 281lbs. I am very proud of what I have accomplished thus far. I still have 33 more pounds to get to my 1st goal weight.. then we will see what happens from there.
I got up at 5:00am to take the pups out and then I had my pre-fueling breakfast of a cinnamon raisin bagel, banana, and a chocolate coconut Clif Bar. (Yum! I just discovered those last night!) After eating I promptly went right back to bed until 8am, when I got up, showered and got ready.
My route today was through the Orono, Veazie town limits. The beginning of this race was uphill, and I was dreading it, but once I took off, it wasn’t that bad. I think the adrenaline must have helped. I had my husband going ahead of me in his truck, and parking to check on my progress and snap a few pictures along the way. This is something that normally wouldn’t be done during a “real” race with other people, so we took advantage of it this morning.
This next picture is almost at the 1 mile mark, after I have come down the other side of that hill I started out on. Yes, I’m still smiling, but I was upset when I looked at my pictures. Look at that left foot… HEEL STRIKE ugh!!! I guess I was so caught up at just trying to do the whole 3 miles that I forgot to focus on my form. I guess I will have to work at that a little more.
Next picture is a little bit further up the road. Probably at about mile 1.5 or so. Going pretty well. Did take a few quick walks when my breathing got out of control. I have learned to recognize when that happens, as my hands start to get tingly. I usually stop, walk for half a minute or so and start again.
FOCUS on the breathing… something I need to pay attention to!
This is at around mile 2. Don’t ask me why hubby took a picture of me under a GASS sign lol. I’ll have to email a copy of this to the “Shut up and run” blogger. She will get the joke.. hahaha. Anyway, you’ll notice at this point that my BondiBand pink headband has moved from my neck, to up on my head, as the
sweat perspiration was running into my eyes. (Gotta love those pink accessories!)
Here I am dodging traffic on the narrowest part of the road.
Now I am making some progress, I am almost at the 3 mile mark. I got this surge of adrenaline at that point and was determined to speed up a bit to get a better overall pace time. I remember reading the sign on my right, “Tranquil Moments Health Center” and laughing to myself. I wasn’t feeling anything tranquil at that time, just wanting it to be done. One small hill and I’m done.. I can do this!!!!
YES!!! I made it! My first 5K is over!
Now I can relax and sign up for other 5K’s now that I know that I can do this. Next weekend is the Crohns event in Portland ME. It’s somewhere around 2 miles, but no one has been able to tell me for sure. It will be around the Promenade on the waterfront. So as long as it doesn’t rain, it should be very nice! I am planning on running that one in my VFF’s. These are still my first choice of running shoes. 🙂
What did you do to celebrate Mother’s Day?
